FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. How many lanterns will be used?
There will be 700 lanterns made of wood, and up to 800 made of paper/foam. Wooden lanterns will be released from seven canoes.

2. What happens to the lanterns after the ceremony?
Every lantern will be retrieved and recycled.

3. Who makes the lanterns?
The original lanterns were ordered from Japan. In April, volunteers will assemble the lanterns. Many volunteers also help after the ceremony, in June, to wash, clean up, disassemble, and store the lanterns. Each step is done carefully by the volunteers, with thoughts for the people who have remembered, and will remember, loved ones during the Lantern Floating Hawaii.

4. How many volunteers are involved?
Numerous volunteers are involved: Canoe clubs, surf security, hula halau, orchestra, the choir, volunteers involved in the lantern transport, lantern release, and the lantern makers, to name a few. Would you like to get involved? Click here.

5. How much does it cost?
Donations from heart are appreciated. Proceeds will be donated back to improvements for Ala Moana Beach Park.
